Festival Trend: DIY Choker

Channel your inner Clueless character - chokers are so back in. You can incorporate a choker into any style outfit whether the vibe be urban, chic, and of course bohemian goddess. Since it's festival season, boho vibin' is currently on my mind.

I haven't made it to Coachella in a few years now, but trend spotting for the best festival outfit is still so fun. Come mid April you'll find me FOMO-ing so hard and browsing the Coachella hashtag.

One trend I am so loving this year is the choker. It is a MUST for Coachella 2016. They are so flattering and easy to pull off - and now, so easy to DIY!

This DIY is super easy. Just head to your local fabric or craft store - I went to Hobby Lobby here in Sacramento. DO NOT ever pay full price at places like Hobby Lobby or Michael's, there are ALWAYS coupons for usually 40% off!

Head to the sewing or fabric section, and you'll find tons of trim and lace by the yard or on spools. If it's by the yard you can literally get enough of it to fit around your neck for less than a dollar. So cheap! If you went to buy a choker at Urban Outfitters for example, you'll easily pay around $20.

Once you've found some gems head to the jewelry department and grab some jewelry clasps to join your two ends together. Check out some of the super cute options I found:

Get out and find yourself some must have options and rock that choker!

Fit Pancakes

Fit Pancakes

How amazing are PANCAKES?! So many varieties, so many flavors, so many toppings. I can't think of very many things that are more of a breakfast comfort food than pancakes.

That being said, they are rarely ever actually healthy. UNTIL NOW!

I've tried 2 and 3 ingredient pancakes, and I feel like they're just not as good.  The whole banana and egg combo was way too eggy for me.

This recipe however, is a must try. And guess what?? There's chia seeds, and cinnamon, and banana, and egg whites! Mix those with things like almond milk, non fat Greek yogurt, and rolled oats as the flour - and you've got some healthy 'cakes that double as food for the soul.

fit pancakes

  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (or tons like me)
  • 1 medium banana
  • 2 large egg whites
  • 1/4 cup non-fat plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons almond milk
  • 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  1.  Preheat skillet over medium heat and coat with coconut oil non stick cooking spray.
  2.  Add ingredients to a blender or Nutri Bullet, and blend until the batter is smooth.
  3.  Pour desired amount of batter onto skillet and heat until edges appear to be cooked.
  4.  Flip and continue to heat until cooked all the way through.
  5.  Remove pancake from skillet and continue through the steps spraying the coconut oil between  pancakes.

Try them! Then let me know what you think, and let me know if you put your own variety on them.  Top with fruit, add mini chocolate chips - the possibilities are endless!

Valentine's Day Banner ♥

That time of year has come my friends ... Valentine's Day!  Let's be real, you either love it - or you hate it.  I myself have never really cared for it. It always seems like such a competition.  Your boyfriend takes you to dinner at one of the trendiest, tastiest, hardest to get in restaurants; paired with a dozen long stem red roses & a box of chocolates.  Dream come true right??

Just as you're feeling like you're on cloud nine, had the best Valentine's day ever - you listen to your coworker who raves and gushes about how her Valentine took her on a helicopter ride from Hollywood to Malibu, where they then rode horses into the sunset.  IT NEVER FAILS.

Anyway, now that I've gotten my scrooge out - I'm good.  All in all though, it is a fun day to remember to show those dear to you that you love them.  Whether it's through an extra phone call, or a home made Valentine.  Life is too short to not spread the love.

This Valentine's Day I'm showing some affection with a DIY Valentine's Day banner, and so should you! Here's what you need:

How cute are those heart doilies?! I found them at the dollar store and was like, um hello YES! I'm telling you. If you feel like your creative juices are lacking, head there and just meander. Something will almost always come to you - and guess what? It will only cost you a dollar! If you only got one thing of course.  So yeah - twine, paint, and super cute dollar store doilies for the win.

Grab your doilies and paint away! As you can see from the photo above, I started with larger boxy letters. I decided to switch it up to more of a brush style letter since it's what I typically love. I'm not suuuper pumped on how my words/letters came out, but you get the idea. If you're not a painter, you could always use letter stickers.

Weave your twine through the holes {through the front first, then through the back} and you've got a banner! Ta DA! Pretty easy huh? A very unscary DIY if you ask me.

I hope my babe likes my extra gesture of affection

Happy Valentine's Day!

Mojito Mocktail

So the holidays always do me over. Between the end of November and the end of December - there are 4 holidays. 4! {I'm including Xmas Eve, because... well, our family likes to extend Christmas as much as we can}  Then on top of it, throw in my birthday at the beginning of December.

Ok what I'm getting at is I basically eat and drink my face off during that month span - and I don't mean drink water. I've also decided that it's ok.  It's the season to enjoy family, friends, food & life!

So this year {after feeling suuuper extra unhealthy, plump, and like I just killed my body}, my boyfriend and I decided to do dry January. I've looked at it as a self disciplining challenge. Think about it, what's the longest stretch of time that you've gone without a drink?? No bueno right? That's what I was thinking.

So far - so good.  No adult beverages for this girl.  It's been rough.  It begins to change what you do with your time, and how you interact with friends.  Yesterday the BF and I threw together a crock pot in the am, went to a late lunch, then to the museum, and in the evening came home to a warm ready dinner and played our first ever game of Pandemic.  And we thoroughly enjoyed our day!  Also no moral or physical hangover this AM!

Can I just add? There are 5 weekends in this month. Of course there are.  BUT, that will just make me feel that much more proud of my accomplishment.

To help me get through these 5 weekends, I concocted a cocktail sans the booze - a mocktail!  My go to drink is a vodka/soda/lime. This Mojito Mocktail was just the thing to help me feel like I'm getting my weekend spirits in.

Try it out, it really does help!

Mojito Mocktail

  • 4 or 5 sprigs of fresh mint
  • 1 lime
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 6 to 8 ounces soda water
  • Garnish with lime wedges and mint sprig

Muddle the mint & simple syrup in the bottom of a glass. Add the juice of half of the lime & soda water, and mix.

Add fun ice cubes & a cute straw, then decorate with mint sprigs & lime wedges.

And there you have it . . . the cutest little mocktail you've ever seen.

For those of you who are getting all judgey and are thinking - she really can't go a month without drinking?? 1) I can and I'm doing it! 2) I don't feen the booze. In fact, I don't even drink during the week. I do however, enjoy to have a glass or two of wine on a Friday night. Or grab some drinks with the girls on a Saturday night.

You gotta live a little!
